Spenda in the Spotlight – Getting to know our Web Architect, Jhoan Beron
Published: November, 22nd 2024
A Web Architect is like the master builder of the digital world. They design and structure websites and web applications, ensuring everything runs smoothly and efficiently. Think of them as the conductor of an orchestra, making sure every instrument – or in this case – every piece of code works in harmony to create a seamless experience. They plan the layout, select the best tools and technologies, and solve any complex problems that arise. It’s a blend of creativity, strategy, and a touch of digital wizardry.
Today, we’re going behind the scenes with a Q&A session featuring our very own Web Architect, Jhoan Beron, “JB”. We’ll dive into what JB’s daily routine looks like, the challenges he tackles, and the most rewarding aspects of the job.
What excites you most about your job and working at Spenda?
At Spenda, I’m constantly growing and learning. Whether it’s expanding my skills in web development or learning more about how businesses operate, there’s always something exciting happening. Ten years ago, I started as a Junior Front-End Developer, and with the support of an amazing team, I’ve grown both personally and professionally – and continue to do so.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I start my day early with a cup of coffee, checking emails and reviewing work from our developers in India. On the days I work from home, I take a break for breakfast and drop my daughter off at school. Then it’s time for our stand-up meeting to set the day’s goals. My day is usually split evenly between coding and supporting our team of web developers.
After work, I make sure to exercise, then make plans for dinner and some relaxation. This often includes walking our new puppy, Maya, to the park, playing a board game (where my competitive side comes out, much to my family’s dismay), or reading with my daughter. We’re currently enjoying the Harry Potter books after watching all the movies.
What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your role, and how do you overcome them?
Grasping accounting concepts, business transaction documents, and the stages of online payments was initially a challenging process. Fortunately, I have incredibly smart colleagues who have helped me along the way and are always willing to answer my questions.
Most of my team is based in India, which brings the challenges of remote work, such as time zone differences and occasional communication barriers. To address this, I organise a weekly catch-up session, usually on Fridays, for team bonding. During these sessions, we discuss our week and non-work-related topics to strengthen our connection.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job, and what keeps you motivated?
At work, it’s incredibly satisfying to teach and share my experience with our younger developers. I like to think that I’m contributing, even if just a little, to their growth and success in their careers.
On a personal level, providing for my family is my biggest reward. I’m passionate about making sure we have a roof over our heads and food on the table every day. I was born in Colombia, and my parents still live there, so being able to help them financially from time to time brings me joy, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to do so.
Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I’m a big sports fan, so you’ll often find me coaching my daughter’s netball team – the Thunderbolts. I also enjoy watching a good Premier League game (it’s football, not soccer!). Beyond that, I love having coffee with my wife and planning our next adventure together.
Think you’ve got what it takes to join the Spenda team?
