Spenda in the Spotlight – Getting to know our GM of Product Delivery, Sarah Amos
Published: March, 7th 2025

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we are excited to shine a spotlight on the incredible women who drive our success. Today, we’re going behind the scenes with a Q&A session featuring our very own – Sarah Amos. As the General Manager of Product Delivery, Sarah plays a pivotal role in overseeing the development and delivery of our products, ensuring they meet the highest standards of quality and innovation.
What is your role at Spenda, and what does a typical day look like for you?
I ensure our engineering teams – and the leaders who guide them – have everything they need to deliver value efficiently and effectively. Think of me as a coach for the coaches. I don’t score the goals; I help our teams and recognise their ability to win. My day revolves around empowering our engineers, enabling our leaders, and ensuring that problems are clearly articulated, actioned, and prioritised. In practical terms, I collaborate with multiple scrum teams, escalate roadblocks, and streamline processes. Every day, I get to solve complex challenges with an incredible group of people.
What are the most rewarding and challenging parts of your job, and what keeps you motivated?
When the whole team is rowing in the same direction – that’s the magic moment. The challenge? Getting everyone to see the value of working together. You can’t force people to collaborate; they need to recognise why it matters. The hardest part of my job is knowing when to step in and when to let the team fail – because high-performing teams learn just as much from their losses as their wins.
In honour of International Women’s Day, can you share a moment in your career that made you proud to be a woman in business?
It’s not just one moment – it’s resilience. Every stage of my career has come with some form of gender bias. Over time, I’ve learned to recognise it, acknowledge the frustration, and then channel it into action. If we stay bitter, how do we drive better change? By creating space for yourself, you create space for others. I’ve built a team that supports each other, and when you’re not part of the boys’ club – you build your own.
What advice would you give to young women looking to start a career in tech?
Just start and never assume men are more suited for tech. Women haven’t been encouraged to embrace failure, but in tech, failing fast is how you grow. Get comfortable being wrong and wear it like a badge of honour. Start coding online, connect with tech communities, and explore different entry points – testing, development, product management. The key? Embrace feedback and use it to get better.
Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Catching up with mates, swimming in the arvo, and travelling to see my family spread across the countryside. Like everyone, I picked up a COVID side hustle – buying and selling sheep – only to learn it’s wilder than the stock market. So now, I stick to shares. No more side hustles.
